WHAS 70th Annual Show 2014
Was been well received by the members of WHAS and the general public who came to visit the historic site of St Nicholas Park, Warwick, A Lovely sunny warm day greeted the event as a steady flow of people came through the tent curtains to see an array of displays and exhibitions, although number of entrants were slightly down from last year the number of exhibits were up to about 420.
It was good to see so many different ideas in the floral art section and the ever popular scarecrow exhibits seem to be gathering momentum with originality and panache,
The children's section is still proving to be quite successful although numbers of entries in this catorgory were down from last year the innovative and creativity of the youngsters is proving a hit with the visitors, we would still like to see more children participating in these catorgories so come on kids get your ideas on paper now and get organising and designing ready for next time.

You will notice that, as agreed at the last AGM, the fees for 2016 will be a flat rate of £10, and children under 16 will be free. What am I getting for my money you may be asking? Well hopefully 2016 will be as enjoyable and eventful as 2015 has been for WHAS members:
What did we do in 2015? Whilst there was no annual show this year, there were a number of very interesting talks, including one from the Head Gardener at Charlecote, who managed to squeeze us into his busy schedule; Sarah from Hintons enlightened us on the restoration of the walled garden at Guys Cliffe; and Tony Davis from Ryton educated us on propagation.
We also enjoyed some very entertaining social events – the May Quiz certainly exercised our brains; the Harvest Supper, which featured a produce sale, raised some funds for the allotment road; and the year was topped off with the Christmas Social which featured the first outing for Peter Booty’s Bingo Machine! We don’t think it will be the last!
The highlight of the year for many was the coach trip to RHS Wisley, which took place in the middle of August. What a joy not to have to drive oneself there on the M25! A full coachload of members and guests enjoyed a wonderful day out - the rain held off - and these beautiful and inspirational gardens were at their most spectacular. As our society is affiliated to the RHS, we did not have to pay an entry fee to the gardens, just the cost of the coach and it was well worth it.
Your committee has already worked out a similarly entertaining schedule for 2016 including talks on organic gardening, quizzes, Christmas specials and a visit to Birmingham Botanical gardens. All details will be on your membership card.
Apart from the social side of WHAS, your membership entitles you to some very useful discounts:
Suttons Seeds offer members a very generous discount of 25% off seed orders and 10% off other items. To get this discount ensure you have a 2016 Suttons Catalogue with the special order form with discount code – it can be used for on-line, telephone and postal orders. Catalogues are available to members from the Trading Hut at Percy Estate Allotments and at the meetings.
The Trading Hut is open from 10 a.m -12 noon every Sunday morning (from Jan ). The ethos of the hut is to sell growing essentials at very low cost and WHAS members get an extra 10% off. It may not be as glamorous as the garden centre but you might be surprised at what we have on offer there – compost, fertilisers, fleece, weed control fabric, bird netting, canes, grit, etc.
You are also entitled to 10% off certain items at Hintons Nurseries on Coventry Rd, Warwick – well worth a visit.
Please continue to check our website for up to date information about the society (www.whasociety.org).
We hope that this newsletter shows what good value your membership is. Please get your friends to join too. We especially would welcome some young members to join us. We would also be interested to hear your views on what we have on offer!

You are PROTECTED if we go bust!
In the unlikely event of Adrian Smith & Partners Limited becoming insolvent, the UK Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) would take effect and eligible investors (principally private individuals) would be protected by the Scheme.
The FSCS is the UK's compensation fund of last resort for customers of authorised financial services firms. The FSCS may pay compensation if a firm is unable, or likely to be unable, to pay claims against it. This is usually because it has stopped trading or has been declared “in default”.
The actual level of compensation you receive will depend on the basis of your claim. The FSCS only pays compensation for financial loss. Compensation limits are per person per firm, and per claim category.

THE HUMBLE BUMBLE IS BACK FROM THE DEAD
The Story of The Short Haired Bumble Bee
Further releases are now being planned to help build the population
Continue reading the main story Related Stories
The short-haired bumblebee started dying out in Britain in the 1980s and officially became extinct in 2000. A reintroduction project saw queen bees brought over from Sweden. After two releases of queens at the RSPB's Dungeness reserve in Kent, offspring worker bees have been recorded there for the first time. Short-haired bumblebees were once widespread across the south of England but declined as their wildflower rich grasslands disappeared. Nikki Gammans, who leads the project, said: "This is a milestone for the project and a real victory for conservation. "We now have proof that this bumblebee has nested and hatched young and we hope it is on the way to become a self-supporting wild species in the UK. 'Fantastic reward' "It's been a long journey to get here, from creating the right habitat for them, collecting queens in the Swedish countryside, scanning them for diseases and then eventually releasing them at Dungeness. "Seeing worker bees for the first time is a fantastic reward for all that hard work but we still have a long way to go to ensure this population is safe and viable." A first generation of queens, which were released last year, struggled in the summer's cold, wet conditions. But a second release of queens from Sweden bolstered the colony. The reintroduction project has involved work with farmers to create flower-rich meadows in Dungeness and Romney Marsh which have also boosted the numbers of other threatened bumblebees. Further releases are planned to help build the population at Dungeness. |
Trip to Barnsdale Gardens and the Gate Garden Centre
THE GATES GARDEN & NURSERY CENTRE
A warm welcome and a great day out... Set in a beautiful Leicestershire rural location, just 4 miles from the market town of Oakham, we have everything you need for the perfect day out. Built within an original 1818 Victorian walled garden, formerly part of Cold Overton Hall, the nursery was founded by Fred and Ivy Gates when they created a market garden back in 1948. Still very much a family business we are proud to say that many of the traditional values the business was built on are just as important to us today. With the widest choice and quality of goods, ranging from indoor and outdoor plants, gifts, garden and conservatory furniture, clothing and so much more to offer why not pay us a visit and experience the charm of Gates Nurseries for yourself? Our traditional farmhouse style Tea Shop serves light lunches, morning coffee or afternoon tea and if you are thinking of bringing the whole family you won’t want to miss our childrens’ play area – they’ll love it! ![]() Feature of The Month

FEATURE OF THE MONTH
![]() Work begins on the refurbishment of the Trading Hut
A Team of our very own Committee members have begun work on the refurbishment of the trading hut sited at mill bank allotments. This is essential work to replace the rotting floor of the main hut and to improve access and storage of Horticultural products for allotment holders etc. This work also relates to the new allotment garden project situated immediately behind the Trading Hut, creating easier access to the gardens, which are in the early stages of development. to see more photos of the work in progress visit our new page

![]() A party of 20 members and guests departed from Cape Road by coach to visit Barnsdale, a set of gardens created by the late Geoff Hamilton.
In the morning we stopped at Gates Garden Centre for possible purchases and coffee before setting off to Barnsdale where we arrived early afternoon. The site comprises of over 30 small garden areas many created for BBC TV programmes. Each garden was different and showed whate could be created in a relatively small area. Some gardens were formal such as the Japenese garden and others less so. There were allotments and water features. Overall it was a very successful day and was enjoyed by all and those who did not book missed a very special day. Peter Booty Chairman WHAS www.whasociety.org |

FLOODS in WARWICK November 2012
Everyone has been affected by the recent floods of November 2012, these are just a few of the devastating scenes from the Allotment site at Millbank in Warwick, Luckily Sylvia Murray who runs the Trading hut was not affected by the floating store. The offshore rescue boat managed to save her before the water was able to come over the tops of her wellies!! However a considerable amount of water damage occured and we hope that the allotment will soon get back to some normality in the very near future. If you would like to see your photos uploaded to our website then email them to whas2012@gmail.com.The best photo sent will be shown on the front page as best picture of the month.
